Google AI Mode links are becoming more prominent, alongside changes to links in AI Overviews. For publishers and businesses, the useful question is what happens after someone encounters one.
A citation can support Google’s answer without producing a visit. A clickable creator name can lead to another Google page. A visually prominent link can also remain hidden inside an aggregate reporting metric.
The October 15 update deserves more than a count of additional links. Here is how to assess the placement, destination and practical value of your site’s opportunity.
What Changed in Google AI Mode Links and AI Overviews?
Google’s October 15 announcement describes five changes:
| Change | Announced status |
|---|---|
| More inline links placed higher more often | Updates launching. |
| A top section for task-specific official links | Testing. |
| Timely article carousels in more locations and languages | Expansion beginning. |
| Related-article links with thumbnails | More prominent design. |
| Creator and publisher names linking to Search profiles in AI Mode video results | Testing. |
This is a mixture of releases, expansion and experiments. Do not assume every account or query displays every feature.
The announcement does not establish a measured traffic increase for your site. Treat the changes as a reason to inspect relevant results and the pages they lead to.
Separate Source Selection From Click Opportunity
A useful audit has three questions:
- Was your page selected as a source?
- Was its link presented in a place and context you observed?
- Did someone visit and complete a meaningful action?
These questions require different evidence. A screenshot can establish an observed placement. It cannot tell you how many users clicked that placement.
Likewise, an increase in website sessions does not identify the particular link design responsible. Other queries, rankings, campaigns or changes in demand may have contributed.
Our earlier analysis of AI Overview links that lead into AI Mode covers another part of the journey. The current audit should distinguish navigation within Google from a visit to your external page.
Count a mention, an external link and a website session separately. Combining them into one visibility total makes the report harder to interpret.
Give the Reader a Useful Reason to Visit
The answer should be clear on your page. You do not need to bury it to manufacture a click.
Instead, identify what the visitor can verify, customize or complete there. A source page might offer original measurements, an interactive calculation, detailed compatibility information or the actual application process.
Consider a hypothetical software comparison. An AI answer may summarize export support, while your documentation supplies the supported fields, plan restrictions and a sample file. Those details help someone decide whether the product meets their requirements.
That is a stronger destination than a second generic explanation of why exporting data matters.
Our search intent framework helps distinguish a quick fact check from a task that requires a fuller resource.
Before adding content, finish this sentence: “After reading the summary, a visitor would come here to…” If the answer is only “read the same summary again,” investigate what substantive information the page is missing.
Match the Page to the Type of Opportunity
Different search tasks justify different destinations. Use the observed result to investigate the task, rather than forcing every page toward the same format.
For a Specific Fact, Supply Traceable Evidence
State the answer precisely and place its scope nearby. A performance figure needs a test method, sample and date. A product capability needs applicable versions and limitations.
Avoid a headline figure that becomes misleading when separated from a footnote. Make important conditions easy for readers to find and check.
Our work on non-commodity content explains how original evidence can add something beyond a rewritten overview.
This improves the usefulness of the source. It does not guarantee citation, a particular anchor phrase or a higher placement.
For an Official Task, Make the Destination Unambiguous
If your organization operates the relevant process, maintain a clear page for it. Examples might include cancelling your own subscription, requesting your own service or accessing your official support procedure.
Explain who can use it, what information is needed and the next step. Check that the main action works on mobile and does not send visitors through unrelated navigation.
An independent explainer about another company’s process should identify itself accurately. Calling a page “official” does not make it the authoritative place to complete that company’s task.
For Reporting, Explain What Is New
Distinguish an original finding from background context and identify when the facts were checked. Update substantive information when it changes, rather than changing a date to create an appearance of freshness.
Use an accurate headline and a relevant image. If the thumbnail suggests an event or finding the article does not contain, the destination fails its promise.
For related reading, provide a distinct next angle. A practical implementation, source document or investigation can add more than a near-duplicate article targeting another phrase.
Understand What Preferred Sources Can and Cannot Do
Google’s Preferred Sources documentation says selected publications can receive a preferred badge in AI Mode and AI Overviews for users who chose them.
The documentation also describes eligibility, including domain or subdomain scope and inclusion in Search generative AI features. It provides a supported button or deep link for helping readers select a source.
Check whether your publication appears in the source preferences tool before adding that option to your site. Let readers choose it voluntarily and explain the feature accurately.
A reader’s preference is not evidence that everyone now sees your content more often. Keep personalized checks separate from checks made without that selection.
For a small audit, record whether the tested account selected your publication. Otherwise, a preferred badge can be mistaken for a result that all prospective readers receive.
A Creator Profile Click Is Not Yet a Website Visit
Google’s Search profile setup guidance explains its profile product and eligibility. Check current requirements rather than assuming that any author byline qualifies.
When you observe a clickable creator name, follow the route and record each destination. The profile itself may be useful for discovery, but arriving there is different from reaching your website.
Review the eligible profile’s identity and destinations for accuracy. Can a reader identify the creator, understand their work and reach the appropriate published material?
Do not invent credentials or modify author information to imply eligibility you do not have. Clear identity is useful to readers even when this particular test is unavailable to your account.
In reports, distinguish an observed profile link from an observed external link. Your analytics cannot count a visit that never reached a page where your measurement runs.
Why a Higher Link May Not Improve Average Position
Google’s Search Console counting documentation says an AI Overview occupies one position in search results, with its links assigned that position.
Moving a link higher inside that Overview does not, by itself, create a better reported position. Visual placement and the position of the containing result are different observations.
The same documentation describes AI Mode separately. Do not apply the AI Overview rule indiscriminately to every AI Mode layout.
Keep a dated screenshot or observation record for placement. Use Search Console for the metrics it actually reports. Do not infer that an unchanged average position proves the visual update had no effect.
Likewise, aggregate CTR is not a controlled test of one link treatment. Our organic CTR analysis workflow helps identify pages worth investigating while preserving that distinction.
Build a Small, Repeatable Link Audit
Choose a manageable set of genuine user tasks spanning factual questions, official actions and deeper research. Include timely topics only where they fit your publication.
Record the query, date, country, language, device, product surface and relevant account settings. When visible, record the selected model too.
For each response, note:
- Whether your brand is named and your domain linked.
- The link’s role: supporting evidence, task destination or related reading.
- Whether reaching it requires expansion or scrolling in the observed layout.
- The displayed text and the actual destination after navigation.
- Whether the landing page delivers the promised information or action.
Repeat checks under similar conditions. If your link appears in three of twelve recorded responses, report that sample instead of presenting it as your share of all Google AI links.
Prioritize a wrong destination, a misleading claim or a broken task before trying to optimize the appearance of an otherwise useful page.
Connect the Audit to Website Outcomes Carefully
Google’s AI features guidance includes AI experiences in overall Web search reporting and says normal SEO eligibility remains relevant. A page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link; selection is not guaranteed.
Review the reporting available in your property. Do not invent a dedicated metric for a particular inline-link position, carousel design or experimental profile treatment.
For website behavior, examine landing sessions and meaningful actions in GA4. Google’s channel definitions include AI Mode and AI Overviews within Organic Search, rather than the AI Assistant channel used for other recognized assistant sources.
Our GA4 traffic sources explanation provides context for interpreting those categories.
Compare consistent periods, devices and markets. Log page edits and other campaigns. Without a genuine pre-update baseline, call the first set of observations a starting point, not a before-state.
FAQs
Does Google’s update guarantee more publisher traffic?
No. More prominent links create an opportunity to investigate. Your site’s visits and useful actions still need measurement.
Are all five changes available everywhere?
No universal availability is established by the announcement. It distinguishes updates, an expanding rollout and tests. Record what appears in the markets you monitor.
Can I make Google use my page as an official task link?
You cannot guarantee selection. If you operate the task, provide an accurate, accessible destination. Do not label an independent explanation as the official process.
Will a higher inline link improve my Search Console position?
Not necessarily. Links within an AI Overview share the position of that Overview. A visual change inside it is not the same as moving the entire result.
Do Search profile clicks count as visits to my website?
Only an actual visit to your website can appear in its own visitor measurement. Inspect whether the user stays on Google or follows an external destination.
Should I withhold the answer to encourage clicks?
No. Answer clearly, then offer something useful beyond the summary: evidence, a tool, detailed conditions or a task the visitor can complete.
Conclusion
Google’s link changes make it worth checking how sources are presented and where their links lead. The useful SEO response is to match a trustworthy page with a real reason to visit.
Record placement, destination and outcomes separately. Improve the information or action behind the link, then measure what changed without treating every citation as traffic.
